Phexxi

It’s a Pill … It’s a Ring … No, It’s Phexxi!

With a large cast of women using some form of contraception and growing number of them demanding nonhormonal alternatives – enter stage left, Phexxi!

Phexxi is the latest contraceptive option approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  Unlike many other contraceptive options, Phexxi contains no hormones.  Instead this prescription medication contains lactic acid, citric acid and potassium bitartrate which act to lower the vaginal pH making it more difficult for sperm to travel to the egg.

Phexxi comes in a pre-filled applicator, similar to a tampon, which is inserted into the vagina prior to sexual intercourse.  Phexxi is very thick and therefore does not leak during intercourse.

When to Use it?

Phexxi must be used just prior to intercourse and is ineffective if it is used more than one hour prior or any time after intercourse.  Additionally, for couples that have sexual intercourse multiple times within an hour additional doses of Phexxi are required.

How Effective is Phexxi?

Phexxi is about 86% effective.  This is in comparison to 72% for spermicide, 78% for withdrawal, 82% for condoms and 91 to >99% for hormonal forms of contraception.

Why is Phexxi Better Than Other Spermicides?

Not only is Phexxi more effective than other spermicides, it also is not associated with an increased risk of HIV and other STI transmission as is seen in high risk women using conventional spermicides alone.

What are the Disadvantages of Phexxi?

While Phexxi can prevent pregnancies, it does not protect against any sexually transmitted infections. Additionally, Phexxi may not be used in combination with the NuvaRing or in women with recurrent urinary tract infections.
